I began my low carb diet (around 50 net per day) almost 3 months ago. I have only lost 2 lbs. I need to lose at least 30. I am 62 years old and in good health. Everything I have read leads me to believe that I am doing everything correctly. I even make my own Keto bagels! What do you think could be the issue? Conklin's fasting therapy was adopted by neurologists in mainstream practice. In 1916, a Dr McMurray wrote to the New York Medical Journal claiming to have successfully treated epilepsy patients with a fast, followed by a starch- and sugar-free diet, since 1912. In 1921, prominent endocrinologist Henry Rawle Geyelin reported his experiences to the American Medical Association convention. He had seen Conklin's success first-hand and had attempted to reproduce the results in 36 of his own patients. He achieved similar results despite only having studied the patients for a short time. Further studies in the 1920s indicated that seizures generally returned after the fast. Charles P. Howland, the parent of one of Conklin's successful patients and a wealthy New York corporate lawyer, gave his brother John Elias Howland a gift of $5,000 to study "the ketosis of starvation". As professor of paediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital, John E. Howland used the money to fund research undertaken by neurologist Stanley Cobb and his assistant William G. Lennox.[10]

Yes, some ideas on meal plans and very easy recipes would be very helpful. I’m 67, very overweight, diabetes, high blood pressure. My big love are all the carbs. This way of life seems impossible to me, all that fat just doesn’t sound appealing. I can’t see how to eat that much fat a day. Years ago, I did try Dr. Atkins diet but I had a very hard time with the very limited carbs. But now, I need to something drastic but haven’t a clue how to start.

41 pounds is wonderful! How much more do you feel you need to lose? I honestly think you’re not eating enough with just 700-900 calories and then you’re body is craving and hunger when you are actually home. I would suggest trying to be more at 1000 -1100 on each day consistently and give it at least a month. I’ve not quite figured out the plateau area yet for myself and since writing this post my weight hasn’t budged and it’s been 3 weeks so I am working on changing some things and will update if I have success with it. Also I forgot to mention Intermittent Fasting? Have you tried that? Dr.Eric Berg on youtube has a lot of info on that if you’re interested. Good luck!
My children are on a low carb diet but have the occasional treat with Dad and friends with parties etc. I’m undecided on keto for children unless the child wasn’t having success losing weight on a low carb diet. I think it would be best to speak to his pediatrician if he does have a lot of weight to lose. I can say being on keto does help with sugar and carb cravings more than anything I’ve ever tried. For orecchiette: cut dough into 4 pieces, roll out into even-sized logs and slice off even-sized pieces. This will ensure evenly-sized pasta. Using your thumb, press each piece against your opposite palm, creating an indentation.  Lightly dust with coconut flour as needed. You can either leave them as they are or turn them out (see post for gif images). 
Almond flour recipes typically require more eggs and more leavening agent to help them rise properly. I also like to add a little dry protein, like whey protein powder, as I find this can help [with rising?].  Almond flour recipes may also contain less oil and liquid as well, to account for the high fat content of the nuts. In my experience, low carb, gluten-free batters are thicker than their conventional counterparts. Resist the urge to thin them out, as you may end up with a soggy mess.

The ketogenic diet is a mainstream dietary therapy that was developed to reproduce the success and remove the limitations of the non-mainstream use of fasting to treat epilepsy.[Note 2] Although popular in the 1920s and '30s, it was largely abandoned in favour of new anticonvulsant drugs.[1] Most individuals with epilepsy can successfully control their seizures with medication. However, 20–30% fail to achieve such control despite trying a number of different drugs.[9] For this group, and for children in particular, the diet has once again found a role in epilepsy management.[1][10]
I will say, though, that if you can bite the bullet and buy the products and make it one time, you will have the products for refills of the mix over and over since it uses small amounts of various things and since it is a bulk mix (makes a lot). (Then I recommend buying the products one at a time each month or however often you order or go to stores carrying the products, so that it will not feel overwhelming to continue making the mix cost-wise.)

These are amazing! I only had almond meal instead of almond flour and didn’t have a donut pan so I used a muffin pan. I was surprised at how light and fluffy they were, and the taste! Oh my!! I was so wrapped I made another batch today but just left them plain with no coating and they were divine. I also froze some yesterday and thawed one and they freeze excellent. Thank you Maya!


So, recently when I was craving Monterey Chicken and didn’t have time to wait for the chicken to cook in the crockpot, I made a low carb skillet version that turned out just like the one I remembered. It was extremely flavorful and delicious! All in all, it took about 25 minutes from start to finish since I had already cooked the bacon earlier in the day and my homemade low carb sugar-free BBQ sauce was already in the fridge.
I was a Corpsman (not a corpse-man as some recent somewhat fanatical president would say), and I can tell you many stories of Marines and Sailors who maintained restrictive diets (aka picky eaters). Most obvious was lack of sustaining energy (hypoglycemia) at mile 15 (with 80lbs of gear including a 6.5lb rifle and 200 rnds of ammo, etc.) and depletion of essential vitamins, electrolyte imbalance. They were always the first to collapse and have to hear me scold “see I told you so.” An IV of D5W usually does the trick (D is for dextrose, OMG!)

I had pasta last night, and I feel guilty that I cheated. This recipe is that good. I followed your directions exactly, including simmering the noodles in some sauce for a few minutes. What size pan did you use? It was hard for me to estimate and I ended up throwing away some egg mixture. Putting pan sizes in all your wonderful recipes would be helpful. Keep up the good work. Hi John, Thank you for the feedback. Sometimes this bread takes a little more effort to rise and the batter has to be mixed well to create air bubbles. Use very fresh baking powder, too. The bluish tint can come from an interaction with the psyllium husk powder, and the brand I use (linked on the recipe card) doesn’t usually do this, but either way it’s safe to eat. I’m glad you still liked it!

Wow!! I was so happy to see last night that I had all of the ingredients except the flax seeds, so I threw all these ingredients together and am enjoying them this morning on my homemade Gree yogurt…delish!! This is really giving me my cereal satisfaction. I did substitute some ground flax for the flax seeds and it seems to have worked beautifully. Other than that I followed the recipe exactly and couldn’t be happier with the results! Thank you thank you for posting this!
A recent systemic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing the long-term effects (greater than 1 year) of dietary interventions on weight loss showed no sound evidence for recommending low-fat diets. In fact, low-carbohydrate diets led to significantly greater weight loss compared to low-fat interventions. It was observed that a carbohydrate-restricted diet is better than a low-fat diet for retaining an individual’s BMR. In other words, the quality of calories consumed may affect the number of calories burned. BMR dropped by more than 400 kcal/day on a low-fat diet when compared to a very low-carb diet.

I really like this stuff. I've been following the THM plan for around a month now and it's working great. I have recently started using a lot of the THM recipees and this is one of the ingredients that are used quite often. It makes it a lot easier just to use their blends but, you can use other things as a substitute. It really does work great in baking and tastes good too. I will definitely purchase it again.
I am post menopause and I did lose about 40 lbs. Then I stalled and stalled. I was too hot all the time and was having sleep issues. I added more carbs and was better. I attempted keto/ low carb again in January. Two weeks in I had the same symptoms. It is not uncommon. It works well for some but not for me and a few of the other women at my gym. I liked what I was eating and I stuck to it through the stall but no. With the guidance of my trainer I have modified it, lost weight and feel great. Sleep helps!

Hi Kathy, Almond flour doesn’t rise very much, but if they didn’t at all, it might be that you need newer baking powder. Falling apart is also likely due to the baking time I had in the original recipe, and I’ve updated it for a better result. Check the post for new tips! Cookies sound like an interesting idea, too, though I think the batter might be too liquid to form them.
Participants returned every other week for 16 weeks for further diet counseling and medication adjustment. When a participant neared half the weight loss goal or experienced cravings, he or she was advised to increase carbohydrate intake by approximately 5 g per day each week as long as weight loss continued. Participants could choose 5 g carbohydrate portions from one of the following foods each week: salad vegetables, low-carbohydrate vegetables, hard or soft cheese, nuts, or low-carbohydrate snacks. Diabetes medication adjustment was based on twice daily glucometer readings and hypoglycemic episodes, while diuretic and other anti-hypertensive medication adjustments were based on orthostatic symptoms, blood pressure, and lower extremity edema.
However, replacing high carb flours like all-purpose flour, wheat flour, corn flour, and rice flour with low-carb flour is not as simple as just using one for the other. Due to the difference in composition between high-carb and low-carb flours, you will need to use different amounts of low-carb flour together with other essential ingredients that you don’t typically find in traditional baking recipes like psyllium husk, xanthan gum, and protein powder.
Measuring blood ketones is the most reliable method. There is a home blood test you can use, but the strips can be very expensive. An alternative is to measure ketones in the urine with a dipstick test, which is much more accessible and inexpensive. However, this method is much less reliable and as time goes on and the body adapts to ketosis, it becomes even less reliable.

When it comes to low carb breakfasts, it's easy to go the route of bacon and eggs. We all do it and it works great. It's filling, delicious and basically no carbs. It can sometimes be difficult to find a cereal that actually fills you up till lunch, so a keto-compliant granola can be the answer. This one is deliciously crunchy and has a warming flavor from the cinnamon and tastes great with your favorite nut milk. Nuts can be a great source of goodness and energy, so this can also be eaten as a snack when you need a little something to keep you going.
ADA dieters can use it to cut the amount of carbohydrates from grains in their diet and to allow for other carbohydrate containing foods in the diet based on their recommended amounts. Walnut flour also contains healthy fats, fiber to help slow down the break down of other carbohydrates eaten with a meal and it’s got a great nut-buttery taste. The oils in the walnuts give it added flavor.

In addition, on the day the diet was initiated, diabetes medications were reduced – generally, insulin doses were halved, and sulfonylurea doses were halved or discontinued. Due to the possible diuretic effects of the diet soon after initiation, diuretic medications were discontinued if of low dosage (up to 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide or 20 mg of furosemide) or halved if of higher dosage. Participants were also instructed to take a standard multivitamin and drink 6–8 glasses of water daily, and were encouraged to exercise aerobically for 30 minutes at least three times per week.
LOW CARB & WHOLE-GRAIN BREADS: Lower-carb breads and tortillas can be a great source of fiber; look for those with at least 4 grams of fiber per serving. Look for 100 percent whole-grain bread (the term “multigrain" doesn't ensure it is all whole grain; check the ingredient list). Spread your toast with two tablespoons of a natural peanut butter for another 1.9 grams of fiber.

Taste is quite eggy; I have issues with the smell and taste of eggs (I usually hurl immediately). I was hoping this would be more noodle than egg 🙁 This being said; I simmered it in a broth (2 pkgs beef OXO, 2 tsps garlic powder, 1/2 tsp pepper; 1/8 tsp sirracha; 2 tsps oregano and about 2 a cup and half of water). Then I added some shaved beef that I had fried with orions and garlic – Like a makeshift PHO; Its tastes pretty amazing; but I can still only eat it in little bis because the noodles are still quite eggy :/ I would NOT make this recipe without a silicone mat and don’t spread the mixture all the way to the edges if the mat fits your Ian exactly or it will run under it as the mixture is VERY thin, definetly not the traditional sense of “batter”. I cooked for exactly 5 mins, it will look like it isn’t done, but trust the recepie, it is done. I used a spatula to slowly peel it off piece by piece; there was quite a bit of breakage, so don’t expect to get long noodles, but if you are careful you can definetly get a decent noodle. Overall a good recipe, just not one for someone who doesn’t particularly like eggs.

The two-year-old suffered from epilepsy that had remained uncontrolled by mainstream and alternative therapies. Abrahams discovered a reference to the ketogenic diet in an epilepsy guide for parents and brought Charlie to John M. Freeman at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which had continued to offer the therapy. This inspired Abrahams to create the Charlie Foundation to promote the diet and fund research.[10] A multicentre prospective study began in 1994, the results were presented to the American Epilepsy Society in 1996 and were published[17] in 1998.
