One of the central questions new adherents to the ketogenic diet must answer is whether or not they want to incorporate meat into their new diet. It is entirely possible to consume adequate levels of healthy fats whether you approach the diet as an omnivore or a vegetarian, so this decision is largely a personal one. However, if you choose to incorporate meat into your version of the ketogenic diet, it is crucial to ensure it is grass-fed, organic, and free of antibiotics. Furthermore, it is important to focus primarily on above-ground leafy vegetables, with meat serving as a side dish. An example of the perfect plate for a keto omnivore would be a sizeable portion of colorful, above-ground leafy vegetables covered with a healthy fat like olive oil, paired with a 3-5 oz serving of high-quality meat.

Well there are plenty low-carb bread options out there nowadays–we keep adding to this list of great low-carb breads–but what do you do about those pasta cravings? While a traditional slice of bread will pack 16 grams of carbs or more per slice, a serving of pasta is no joke! At 40+ grams of carbs for one cup of pasta, it is not easy on the blood sugar!
To replace 1 egg, mix 1 tbsp ground flax meal with 3 tbsp of water and allow it to swell. This can be used to replace the eggs but it will not give to properties that eggs do. Eggs help bind the ingredients, eggs help the baking become light, fluffy and rise. Eggs help emulsify the mixture. This formula is used in many vegan recipes or those who are allergic to eggs. If a recipe is heavily based on eggs, this substitution will not work.
Wilder's colleague, paediatrician Mynie Gustav Peterman, later formulated the classic diet, with a ratio of one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight in children, 10–15 g of carbohydrate per day, and the remainder of calories from fat. Peterman's work in the 1920s established the techniques for induction and maintenance of the diet. Peterman documented positive effects (improved alertness, behaviour, and sleep) and adverse effects (nausea and vomiting due to excess ketosis). The diet proved to be very successful in children: Peterman reported in 1925 that 95% of 37 young patients had improved seizure control on the diet and 60% became seizure-free. By 1930, the diet had also been studied in 100 teenagers and adults. Clifford Joseph Barborka, Sr., also from the Mayo Clinic, reported that 56% of those older patients improved on the diet and 12% became seizure-free. Although the adult results are similar to modern studies of children, they did not compare as well to contemporary studies. Barborka concluded that adults were least likely to benefit from the diet, and the use of the ketogenic diet in adults was not studied again until 1999.[10][14]
I’ve searching and searching for a keto bread that is not too eggy or have no cheese. I just mad this bread and oh! It’s soooo good! It’s got the wholesome texture but nice and firm. No eggy taste! I will say, though, that if you can bite the bullet and buy the products and make it one time, you will have the products for refills of the mix over and over since it uses small amounts of various things and since it is a bulk mix (makes a lot). (Then I recommend buying the products one at a time each month or however often you order or go to stores carrying the products, so that it will not feel overwhelming to continue making the mix cost-wise.)
Trim Healthy Mama-Friendly (THM) (www.trimhealthymama.com): This is an S baking mix as it is written due to the heavy almond flour amount. However, it could easily be made into a Fuel Pull or an E mix by reducing the amount of almond flour. For the FP, you would reduce the amount of almond flour and replace it with oat fiber. For the E mix, you would reduce the amount of almond flour and replace it with oat flour or sprouted wheat flour. Easy peasy! Also, like the suggestions above for the Family-Friendly folks, you could make it as it is listed and then use half and half—half Basic Low Carb Flour Mix and half oat fiber for FP OR half Basic Low Carb Flour Mix and half oat flour or sprouted wheat for E mix. (I do not do much FP or E baking, but I would make this mix as is and then combine it with Sprouted Flour Mix anytime you want to make an E baked good. Easy peasy!)

Hi Cyn, The numbers are general guidelines but will vary depending on many factors, such as activity level, insulin resistance, weight and more. There is no single magic number, just conventional recommendations that are a good starting point. I will have a macro calculator coming soon that will help determine what is best for each person, but even then it’s an approximation. The only way to know for sure is to test. If keto is your goal, it’s usually best to start lower and then see if you can stay in ketosis when increasing.

When it comes to low carb breakfasts, it's easy to go the route of bacon and eggs. We all do it and it works great. It's filling, delicious and basically no carbs. But, some of us can get bored of that and want to change it up and that's where low carb cereals come into play. Now, I've tried many low carb cereals from Amazon and there are a few options, but they just aren't low carb enough. We wanted to change that, because as I've mentioned, cereal is my ultimate food. I have spent weeks reading and learning about the Keto diet plan, downloading random recipes that my husband might even try, and have been overwhelmed with all the information. I was pleased to find your system and how organized everything seems to be. The only question I have is will I be able to “temporarily suspend” my subscription if I find there are more recipes than I have time to prepare. I want to only do about 3 per week and repeat them as leftovers, since I have very little time after working a 12-hour shift, to do much cooking. Once I “catch up,” I would reinstate my subscription. Is that an option? Looking forward to trying out your program.
I made these tonight for supper (just finished eating) and they were fantastic! I simmered them in a mixture of chicken broth, soy sauce, hot sauce, garlic, and ginger, then added some leftover cooked veggies and chicken for an eastern-inspired chicken noodle soup. I didn’t find the noodles eggy, but it wouldn’t bother me if they were because I love me some eggs. I didn’t change a thing in the recipe (yes, I actually DID use the vital wheat gluten! 😀 ). I know I’ll be making these on a regular basis now – I think I’ll be riffing on the classic tuna noodle casserole later this week. Thanks so much for a wonderful recipe!
Cream cheese – 1.2 carbs, eggs 0.63 carbs, vital wheat gluten 0.1 carbs = 1.93 carbs divided by 2 servings = 0.96 carbs so less than 1 carb per serving. The nutrition info is from a nutritional calculator that I bought along with the recipe plugin that creates the printable recipe box. You can also look up the ingredients on google and add them for yourself. My nutritional calculator doesn’t give a value for a fraction therefore shows 0 carbs even though it is 0.96 carbs. Hope this helps.
This cereal, made by Nutritious Living, comes in four flavors – original, strawberry, vanilla-almond, and maple pecan – and has just six grams of net carbs per serving. These cereals also have 12 grams of protein and six grams of fiber to keep you feeling full until lunchtime. Despite the sweet-sounding flavors, Hi-Lo cereals have just one gram of sugar per serving. The cereal is made with soy grits, wheat gluten, soy protein, corn bran, rice flour, and corn meal.
I made this today and the flavor is outstanding! My only thing about it I’m not completely thrilled with is the lack of clumps of nuts and seeds. I put some pecan pieces in hoping they would form some clumps with the nuts, but it didn’t really help. I’m wondering if a thicker liquid would make a difference. Perhaps Sukrin gold syrup instead of coconut oil and sweetener? Could maybe add some maple flavoring to it. You might not be able to find Sukrin in the UK, but it is accessible through Amazon. Would maybe some of your followers from the US have an opinion about this?

Moreover, two recent meta-analyses sought to investigate the effect of LCD on weight loss and cardiovascular disease risk. Sackner-Bernstein et al. (19) compared LCD to LF, among overweight and obese men and women. The authors found a significantly greater effect of weight loss in the LCD vs. the LF diets (-8.2 kg vs. -5.9 kg). The impact of diet on cardiovascular risk factors was split, with LCD resulting in significantly greater improvements in HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while the LF resulted in significantly greater improvements in LDL and total cholesterol. From this the authors concluded that LCD were a viable alternative to LF diets and recommended “dietary recommendations for weight loss should be revisited to consider this additional evidence of the benefits of [low] CHO diets.” A significant limitation of this meta-analysis, however, was the authors’ definition of low-carbohydrate as a daily CHO consumption less than 120 grams. This value, while well below the standard recommendation of daily CHO consumption, still far exceeds the strict recommendation of KD (≤50 g/day), therefore the results of this meta-analysis must be approached with caution. 

Almond flour recipes typically require more eggs and more leavening agent to help them rise properly. I also like to add a little dry protein, like whey protein powder, as I find this can help [with rising?].  Almond flour recipes may also contain less oil and liquid as well, to account for the high fat content of the nuts. In my experience, low carb, gluten-free batters are thicker than their conventional counterparts. Resist the urge to thin them out, as you may end up with a soggy mess.
The concept of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) is not new (e.g., the Atkins Diet Revolution was first published in 1972), however, there has been a surge of public interest over the last decade in carbohydrate-restricting diets. One particular type of LCD, the ketogenic diet (KD), has shown promise for its purported ability to aid in weight management. Achieving and maintaining significant weight loss over the long-term remains a very elusive endeavor. Low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) have demonstrated promise in this regard and may hold certain advantages over traditional calorie-restricted dietary strategies.
I’ve been using Hodgson Mill soy flour for years, and I’m absolutely heart-broken they stopped making it. I wish I knew why! It was low in carbs and the flavor & consistency differences between the Hodgson Mill and regular flour were negligible. I’ve tried Bob’s soy flour, and it’s not even in the same ballpark with a salty, metallic taste. And the consistency is a super fine, chunky powder that clumps.
There are so many tricks, shortcuts, and gimmicks out there on achieving optimal ketosis – I’d suggest you don’t bother with any of that. Optimal ketosis can be accomplished through dietary nutrition alone (aka just eating food). You shouldn’t need a magic pill to do it. Just stay strict, remain vigilant, and be focused on recording what you eat (to make sure your carb and protein intake are correct).
People suffering from diabetes and taking insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents suffer severe hypoglycemia if the medications are not appropriately adjusted before initiating this diet. The ketogenic diet is contraindicated in patients with pancreatitis, liver failure, disorders of fat metabolism, primary carnitine deficiency, carnitine palmitoyltransferase deficiency, carnitine translocase deficiency, porphyrias, or pyruvate kinase deficiency. People on a ketogenic diet rarely can have a false positive breath alcohol test. Due to ketonemia, acetone in the body can sometimes be reduced to isopropanol by hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase which can give a false positive alcohol breath test result. 
The ketogenic diet, or keto, relies on using your fat as fuel, instead of glucose from carbohydrates or protein. Simply put, the daily ketogenic diet consists of 75 percent fat, 20 percent of protein, and a teeny allotment of carbohydrates, about 5 percent. This balance of macronutrients is intended to put your body in a state of ketosis, which suppresses the release of insulin and blood glucose levels. The benefits of ketosis to your health are improvements in biomarkers like blood glucose, reduction of blood pressure and decreased appetite due to fullness linked to consumption of fats.
I have never made waffles with this mix as we don’t make waffles. However, I would think it would be similar to pancakes, which I have made. Did you use 1/4 cup of Xantham gum? More than this seems to make a pastier batter. When making pancakes, I found that I needed to batter to be way thicker than most pancake batters. I also found that I needed more eggs. As for what else this mix can be used for, I have recipes at the blog for cookies, cupcakes, biscuits, and crepes using this mix. I have dozens of recipes in various stages of testing that use this mix. Some of my favorites are quick breads and muffins and cookies. Cake type recipes (muffins, small loaves of bread, cupcakes, cake, etc.) really turn out well with this mix. Let me know how some other dishes turn out for you! Thanks!

The only other thing it could have been is that I live at 5100′ elevation and it was cold and snowing the day I made them. I am going to make them again and see what happens. I am not giving up! 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I made it last night for the first time & it turned out perfect – just like your picture above! I used the big bowl of my Kitchen Aid food processor to grind the almonds & psyllium husks really finely, then I beat the eggs & coconut oil in the smaller bowl for a few minutes until it looked bubbly, then just added all the ingredients together in the big bowl & continued to process for a few minutes. I sprinkled sesame seeds on the top before putting it in the oven & after 55 minutes, it was perfectly cooked, had a good rise & our house smelt divine! The texture was also just right – soft & fluffy in the middle, golden & crunchy on the outside. I might add some other small seeds to the mix next time. Thank you so much – this is one of the nicest & easiest gf bread recipes I’ve come across!!! Keep up the great work xx
Ketogenic and low-carb diets aren’t as new as most people think. Hi Tanisha, Sunflower seed flour should work in the same quantity (you can buy it here). I haven’t tried it for this recipe, but it does often work as a good almond flour replacement. The only thing to keep in mind is that the bread may come out green in color – sunflower seed flour tends to do this when baked – but it doesn’t affect the taste. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
Sometimes a hot cereal hits the spot, but with around 28 grams per serving, regular oatmeal may overshoot your carb goals. However, sugar-free instant oatmeal has around 19 grams per packet, if you don’t mind the artificial sweeteners, and instant Cream of Wheat has 20 grams per packet, which is about ¾ cup prepared. Two other brands, Sensato and ProtiDIET, are sucralose-sweetened hot cereals. Sensato hot cereal comes in apple cinnamon, strawberrilicious and vanilla almond, with 12, 11 and 10 grams of carbs per ½ cup, respectively. ProtiDIET oatmeals have 6 carb grams per packet and come in cinnamon spice, apple cinnamon and maple brown sugar flavors.
So, recently when I was craving Monterey Chicken and didn’t have time to wait for the chicken to cook in the crockpot, I made a low carb skillet version that turned out just like the one I remembered. It was extremely flavorful and delicious! All in all, it took about 25 minutes from start to finish since I had already cooked the bacon earlier in the day and my homemade low carb sugar-free BBQ sauce was already in the fridge.

I’d heard recommendations of using only egg whites with psyllium, but whole eggs are more convenient. Besides, egg yolks are a natural leavener, so including them, makes the bread rise better in combination with the baking powder. Fortunately, whole eggs worked! It turns out that my friend, Lisa from Low Carb Yum, used whole eggs in her coconut flour psyllium husk bread, too.
