The ketogenic diet is an incredibly powerful tool that can be wonderfully effective in treating a variety of health issues facing modern society. By allowing the body to burn fat for fuel, the ketogenic diet can not only lead to sustainable weight loss, but it actually pushes the body to use an alternative and potentially superior fuel source. This recipe was a complete disaster for me. I decided to double it to get a dozen donuts and followed the recipe exactly. My “dough” was bubbly and foamy and almost had a cream of tartar like taste. During baking, the donuts spilled over the top of the donut pan and made flat cookies on top. I baked it extra long to try to avoid the crumbling but there was no way to get the “donuts” out of the pan. The flat cookie part broke off and I had to scoop the insides out with a spoon. Not sure what I’m going to do with a large bowl of crumbs now. Bummer!

All you need is the right combination of low-carb flours and ingredients to make delicious keto-friendly breads, cookies, cakes, hamburger buns, etc. At this point, I’d be surprised if there are any high-carb recipes that cannot be made into a healthier, low-carb version.
I love these donuts. More importantly my Husband liked them. My first try I was successful. I even used the silicone pans. I sprayed them with Trader Joe’s coconut oil spray and then wiped out the excess with a paper towel. I also baked the batter an additional 3-5 minutes. I won’t coat some of the bottoms next time. The donuts were too sweet for me. I will definitely be baking these beauties again!
Several studies have investigated the potential of LCD or KD on weight loss. For example, Brinkworth et al. (2) compared one year of low-fat (LF) vs. LCD diet in adults with abdominal obesity. Subjects were randomly assigned and diets were isocaloric, with moderate energy restriction. Both groups realized significant weight loss, however, there was no significant difference between groups, suggesting that a LCD was equally effective as a LF diet.

Made this today for my husband. It is delicious. I used coconut oil (the hard kind) and added 1 tsp of cinnamon. Only problem is that it did not crisp up. It’s more “bendy” than crispy. Not dry enough. Definitely baked it long enough. Should I use less coconut oil next time. Any ideas. Thanks. I will definitely make again because the taste is awesome.
This is REALLY good. My OH also thought that this was ‘proper’ bread LOL! Why do people think that anything not made with wheat is not ‘proper’? I guess they don’t have a gluten intolerance. This really is the best low carb GF bread I’ve tasted in a LONG while. It will become a staple in this household that’s for sure. Will definitely still use the 90 second rolls as well for convenience!
Moreover, two recent meta-analyses sought to investigate the effect of LCD on weight loss and cardiovascular disease risk. Sackner-Bernstein et al. (19) compared LCD to LF, among overweight and obese men and women. The authors found a significantly greater effect of weight loss in the LCD vs. the LF diets (-8.2 kg vs. -5.9 kg). The impact of diet on cardiovascular risk factors was split, with LCD resulting in significantly greater improvements in HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while the LF resulted in significantly greater improvements in LDL and total cholesterol. From this the authors concluded that LCD were a viable alternative to LF diets and recommended “dietary recommendations for weight loss should be revisited to consider this additional evidence of the benefits of [low] CHO diets.” A significant limitation of this meta-analysis, however, was the authors’ definition of low-carbohydrate as a daily CHO consumption less than 120 grams. This value, while well below the standard recommendation of daily CHO consumption, still far exceeds the strict recommendation of KD (≤50 g/day), therefore the results of this meta-analysis must be approached with caution.
I make this recipe ALL the time. It’s so good and I’m always bummed out when run out of it. Luckily it is so quick and easy to make. It’s a great low carb cereal and I always double or triple the recipe. (Note…I use half the butter per batch and just mix it longer in my food processor until it all comes together and it comes out perfect every time.)

Hi Louise, I haven’t tried that product so can’t say for sure if it’s a good choice, but it sounds like it is if the recipe worked for you – which is great! Feel free to add herbs, spices, or garlic powder if you want some flavor to the bread. I kept it plain to be used for many different applications. The number of slices will depend on how thick you cut them and the size of your pan.
Thanks so much for sharing your results. You look so good, and you have inspired me to try a more structured version of the Keto Diet. I lost some weight recently on HCG 2.0, which puts you into ketosis (keto flu and all!). I have tried to maintain my weight loss with a version of the Keto Diet, but I know that I am probably still eating too many carbs and not enough fat. I am 47, and I contine to have issues with keeping the weight off despite a healthy diet and exercise. I am sure it is hormone-related.

I was doing LCHF (under 20 carbs most days) , Type II diabetic on a little insulin, After less than 3 mos I brought my A1C from 10.9 down to 7.1…….off to a great start. Now…..I am not only diabetic, I recently had open heart surgery (quadruple bypass),meaning “cardiac diet”. Do you know of any diabetic/cardiac people that are doing Keto? Curious about high fat for cardiac. (FYI: My Doctors are following me closely so know what I’m doing.)
The biggest difference is in the fat!! Your fat should be around 70-75% of your daily food intake! When I first heard that, I was like, “Are you kidding, No Way, I will surely gain weight!” I was truly wrong and misguided. I think we’ve all been too accustomed to hearing for years and years that fat makes you fat! That is the farthest thing from the truth. Let’s not blame the butter for what the bread did. Sugar and Carbs are the culprit to gaining weight among other health related issues.

I was on the ketogenic diet for 6 months to support my husband, who is on it permanently for epilepsy. The diet totally messed with my hormones, which my doctor and my husband’s nutritionist sadly confirmed was a possibility. I am continuing to eat low-carb, but the ketogenic thing unfortunately seemed to work against me as a 49-year old pre-menopausal woman.
It was worth the try since so many of the recipes on this site are wonderful — but I’ll make a little real pasta for an occasional cheat day, or I’ll just add lots of sauteed mushrooms to the bolognese sauce and just have a bowl of sauce. If I try this again I’ll shape the dough into small gnocchi and serve with a butter- or cream-based sauce. That might work because I won’t be thinking “pasta.”
This was very good general. I would love to see a menu plan of what you actually ate between low crab(like a sample day) and Keto. I also found it encouraging that it took you moths to be keto adapted even though you were already doing low carb. Is this because you found it hard to cut out the carbs? I have been trying to do Keto for weight loss and clear mind and focus since the end of December. I did well the first week, then had a bad day and got back to it.. I have a good week and then a bad day and that’s been my cycle for 3 months. SO I have lost some weight 12lbs, but I really need to lose more. Nothing else worked for me to lose weight, My body really likes to hold onto its fat, most likely due to that it doesn’t process stress well and I have a high stress lifestyle. Cinnamon toast crunch is the best cereal by a long shot and I can guarantee this by asking anyone and everyone if it was a part of their childhood, and even adulthood. It is, without fail, the cereal I see the most people purchase when I am at the grocery store. We knew that if we were going to attempt a low carb cereal we would need to pick one that everyone could undoubtedly agree upon as the best, so we decided on Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
I made this today and the flavor is outstanding! My only thing about it I’m not completely thrilled with is the lack of clumps of nuts and seeds. I put some pecan pieces in hoping they would form some clumps with the nuts, but it didn’t really help. I’m wondering if a thicker liquid would make a difference. Perhaps Sukrin gold syrup instead of coconut oil and sweetener? Could maybe add some maple flavoring to it. You might not be able to find Sukrin in the UK, but it is accessible through Amazon. Would maybe some of your followers from the US have an opinion about this?
Hi Pete, We used American cheese because that’s what is on a Big Mac and we were making Big Mac Bites. Also, it’s a misconception that American cheese is not real cheese, it all depends on what you buy. The individually wrapped cheese sliced labeled “cheese product” aren’t real cheese but you can purchase American cheese from the deli counter which is real cheese. If you want to double-check just ask to see the label before purchasing. Boar’s Head makes a great REAL American cheese.
Ketosis means that your body is in a state where it doesn't have enough glucose available to use as energy, so it switches into a state where molecules called ketones are generated during fat metabolism. Ketones can be used for energy. A special property of ketones is that they can be used instead of glucose for most of the energy needed in the brain, where fatty acids can't be used. Also, some tissues of the body prefer using ketones, in that they will use them when available (for example, the heart muscle will use one ketone in particular for fuel when possible).
Made this now and it came out so good!May be not so crunchy but it works, didn’t have macadamia nuts so I omitted that and added coconut shreds at the end of my food processing amd drizzled sugar free chocolate syrup on top before baking to give it that chocolatey smell and holy cow this th ing won’t last!my macros may be off because I subbed things but who cares! While there are many different types of pasta today, the classic cooked, unenriched traditional pasta is about 30 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams. That’s your entire daily carbohydrate intake on the ketogenic diet, if you’re lucky. After that comes a minuscule 0.9 grams of fat, about 6 grams of protein and minimal micronutrients. Even whole wheat pasta, advertised as a health food, contains 37 grams of total carbohydrates[*].
Ketone bodies synthesized in the body can be easily utilized for energy production by heart, muscle tissue, and the kidneys. Ketone bodies also can cross the blood-brain barrier to provide an alternative source of energy to the brain. RBCs and the liver do not utilize ketones due to lack of mitochondria and enzyme diaphorase respectively. Ketone body production depends on several factors such as resting basal metabolic rate (BMR), body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage. Ketone bodies produce more adenosine triphosphate in comparison to glucose, sometimes aptly called a "super fuel." One hundred grams of acetoacetate generates 9400 grams of ATP, and 100 g of beta-hydroxybutyrate yields 10,500 grams of ATP; whereas, 100 grams of glucose produces only 8,700 grams of ATP. This allows the body to maintain efficient fuel production even during a caloric deficit. Ketone bodies also decrease free radical damage and enhance antioxidant capacity.
Similar to our results, three studies noted that diabetes medications were reduced in some participants[6,8,9], although details were provided in only one study. We also discontinued diuretic medications during diet initiation because of concern for additional diuresis incurred by the diet. This concern was based on the theoretical effects of the diet , observed effects of the diet on body water by bioelectric impedance , and practical experience with the diet . Until we learn more about using low carbohydrate diets, medical monitoring for hypoglycemia, dehydration, and electrolyte abnormalities is imperative in patients taking diabetes or diuretic medications.
I have spent weeks reading and learning about the Keto diet plan, downloading random recipes that my husband might even try, and have been overwhelmed with all the information. I was pleased to find your system and how organized everything seems to be. The only question I have is will I be able to “temporarily suspend” my subscription if I find there are more recipes than I have time to prepare. I want to only do about 3 per week and repeat them as leftovers, since I have very little time after working a 12-hour shift, to do much cooking. Once I “catch up,” I would reinstate my subscription. Is that an option? Looking forward to trying out your program.
A study with an intent-to-treat prospective design was published in 1998 by a team from the Johns Hopkins Hospital and followed-up by a report published in 2001. As with most studies of the ketogenic diet, no control group (patients who did not receive the treatment) was used. The study enrolled 150 children. After three months, 83% of them were still on the diet, 26% had experienced a good reduction in seizures, 31% had had an excellent reduction, and 3% were seizure-free.[Note 7] At 12 months, 55% were still on the diet, 23% had a good response, 20% had an excellent response, and 7% were seizure-free. Those who had discontinued the diet by this stage did so because it was ineffective, too restrictive, or due to illness, and most of those who remained were benefiting from it. The percentage of those still on the diet at two, three, and four years was 39%, 20%, and 12%, respectively. During this period, the most common reason for discontinuing the diet was because the children had become seizure-free or significantly better. At four years, 16% of the original 150 children had a good reduction in seizure frequency, 14% had an excellent reduction, and 13% were seizure-free, though these figures include many who were no longer on the diet. Those remaining on the diet after this duration were typically not seizure-free, but had had an excellent response.
I’m afraid I don’t. I have never used peanut flour and would hate to guess a conversion for you. And as you may know, almond flour and coconut flour are completely different beasts so are used completely differently to one another. If you are about to throw it away anyway, maybe try experimenting with it, you have nothing to lose (other than some eggs and butter perhaps).
Infants and patients fed via a gastrostomy tube can also be given a ketogenic diet. Parents make up a prescribed powdered formula, such as KetoCal, into a liquid feed. Gastrostomy feeding avoids any issues with palatability, and bottle-fed infants readily accept the ketogenic formula. Some studies have found this liquid feed to be more efficacious and associated with lower total cholesterol than a solid ketogenic diet. KetoCal is a nutritionally complete food containing milk protein and is supplemented with amino acids, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is used to administer the 4:1 ratio classic ketogenic diet in children over one year. The formula is available in both 3:1 and 4:1 ratios, either unflavoured or in an artificially sweetened vanilla flavour and is suitable for tube or oral feeding. Other formula products include KetoVolve and Ketonia. Alternatively, a liquid ketogenic diet may be produced by combining Ross Carbohydrate Free soy formula with Microlipid and Polycose.

I tried to make the egg noodles and it was a total failure. Followed the directions without any substitutions.’ Not sure what happened. The texture was off. It was nearly impossible to remove from the pan and I used the latex mat and sprayed as well. It was mushy and seemed undercooked. I was disappointed because I had made the sauce and was ready to eat. It looked like the mixture was set and cooked, Perhaps my oven is off.
These take care of my bread craving. And, being a person who didn’t want to start out by purchasing a donut pan, I used and 8×8 glass pan; greased and lined (the bottom) with parchment paper. The recipe has the consistency of pudding before it sets and easily conforms to the pan. Also, since I used a glass pan, I lowered the temperature to 325 degrees, cooking time was the same. I cut my ‘donut cake’ into 6ths and it’s delicious. I also I don’t add the topping. Thank you for this recipe.
Most people are used to how white flour works, but when they try to bake or cook with low-carb flour, they most likely will notice some differences. Depending on the source of the flour — and how many carbs, fat and protein calories it has — the flour may well react differently. For example, flour with high protein may clump easier; the flour also may brown or burn quicker than regular flour. This means cooks and bakers may have to experiment with the flour to learn how it works.
I was worried. I read my ingredients and follow the instructions to the letter. I made the little bow ties. I put them in the freezer for 15 minutes and I fried them in garlic and olive oil. They were so good. I think they would definitely stand up to any sauce that you added to them (after they were fried) I can’t wait to try them as fried ravioli. I’m also going to stuff a few with ricotta and sauerkraut, fry them, dress them with sour cream, and call them a pierogi.
Mine didn’t turn out super firm. It was somewhat crumbly, but not the “dust” that some have complained of. I used a silicone liner on the baking sheet for easy removal. I baked it about 5 minutes longer than recommended, but it felt set to the touch, so I removed it. I used a pizza roller while it was still warm to cut it into little squares right on the baking sheet, which were firm enough to keep their shape. DELICIOUS!! More cinnamon flavor and far tastier, but less crunch, than Cinnamon Toast Crunch from my erstwhile fat days. For the coating, I used Sukrin Gold, which is an erythritol based brown sugar sub. Wow!! Tastes like I’m eating snickerdoodles dunked in (almond) milk; the texture is similar, as well. Can’t speak highly enough for this surefire winner that just hit the spot!
It’s a habit to enjoy a brie cheese for desert instead of a piece of chocolate cake but each are favored deserts in France. I’m personally more satisfied after a 350 calorie sized wedge of brie than the same number of calories of cake.. which will give me sugar crash and .. really I’d like two slices of cake(I’ve got a sweet tooth that once I get going it wants to keep being fed)
