I would suggest using a keto calculator on the various websites I mentioned like Maria Body Mind Health or Ketogains. 20 net carbs, not total carbs. So I subtract the total carbs from the fiber to get my net carbs. It should be just 5% of your day, just like the chart I posted, protein can range from 15-25% for my body that is anywhere between 60-80 grams a day and the rest is fat.

And while the diet is relatively easy to follow, there are a number of common misconceptions and lots of outright misinformation that one must be aware of. Made the bread but it didn’t rise and it is probably my fault. My almond flour is stored in the freezer. I probably should have let it come to room temperature first. I watched the video and the loaf shown seems to be narrower than the pan I used. The texture is good. The taste isn’t bad. I just need a “taller” bread to make my husband paninis. AMAZING! I just made this bread and I can’t believe how perfect it is! My fiance and I are doing low carb. Not quite keto but trying to stay close to that range of carb intake! Honestly I’ve just been saying I’m avoiding bread, potatoes, and pasta. Either way this bread rocks. The only substitutions I made to the recipe was plain seltzer water in place of the still water. Wanted to give the dough some extra lift. I also put some pumpkin and sunflower seeds on top to increase the heartiness. This bread came out rocking our socks off. Several studies have investigated the potential of LCD or KD on weight loss. For example, Brinkworth et al. (2) compared one year of low-fat (LF) vs. LCD diet in adults with abdominal obesity. Subjects were randomly assigned and diets were isocaloric, with moderate energy restriction. Both groups realized significant weight loss, however, there was no significant difference between groups, suggesting that a LCD was equally effective as a LF diet.

A well-formulated ketogenic diet, besides limiting carbohydrates, also limits protein intake moderately to less than 1g/lb body weight, unless individuals are performing heavy exercise involving weight training when the protein intake can be increased to 1.5g/lb body weight. This is to prevent the endogenous production of glucose in the body via gluconeogenesis. However, it does not restrict fat or overall daily calories. People on a ketogenic diet initially experience rapid weight loss up to 10 lbs in 2 weeks or less. This diet has a diuretic effect, and some early weight loss is due to water weight loss followed by a fat loss. Interestingly with this diet plan, lean body muscle is largely spared. As a nutritional ketosis state sustains, hunger pangs subside, and an overall reduction in caloric intake helps to further weight loss.

I’m following the ketogenic diet and I find it very easy, pleasant and varied. I can even say that my diet today is more varied than the previous one. I do not intend to leave this diet and I cannot really see why. My initial focus was not to lose weight, I’ve always been lean, but to feel better, well disposed. And I got it! I am very pleased, I have read a lot about it (including scientific literature) and I have influenced other people who need to lose weight or improve some aspects of their health. But from the beginning I went on my own way, without the help of a nutritionist because I did not want to suffer the influence of others’ ideas.
I’ve tried a ”ton” of low carbs foods...so trust me when I tell you how good this stuff is. If your low carb or keto...Sola products are sanity in a bag with a taste authenticity comparitative to their high carb counterparts. You won’t be disappointed so go ahead and order extra. I like to put it in my yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, sugar free pudding, etc. It’s the jam with almond milk by itself too.

I was doing LCHF (under 20 carbs most days) , Type II diabetic on a little insulin, After less than 3 mos I brought my A1C from 10.9 down to 7.1…….off to a great start. Now…..I am not only diabetic, I recently had open heart surgery (quadruple bypass),meaning “cardiac diet”. Do you know of any diabetic/cardiac people that are doing Keto? Curious about high fat for cardiac. (FYI: My Doctors are following me closely so know what I’m doing.)

This makes a great after-school snack for kids and helps them get away from sugary snacks. A quarter of a cup of “old-fashioned" rolled oats (uncooked) boasts 4.1 grams of fiber and, along with an added source of protein such as nuts or an egg, will give you the staying power to get you to lunchtime. If you don't have the five minutes to make oatmeal, though, there are a number of ready-to-eat cereals that are high in fiber. To find the best ones, seek out whole-grain cereals with at least 4 grams of fiber per serving and no added sugars.
I had pasta last night, and I feel guilty that I cheated. This recipe is that good. I followed your directions exactly, including simmering the noodles in some sauce for a few minutes. What size pan did you use? It was hard for me to estimate and I ended up throwing away some egg mixture. Putting pan sizes in all your wonderful recipes would be helpful. Keep up the good work. If you prefer hot to cold cereal, Sensato makes a High Fiber Hot Cereal that comes in five flavors: plain, apple cinnamon, butter pecan, “strawberrilicious,” and vanilla almond. The cereal is sweetened with artificial sweetener, so there are no calories from sugar. Each serving has about 12 grams of carbs, ten of which are fiber. The cereal is a mix of wheat bran, flax seed meal, and soy protein isolate.
You can make “quick breads”–or non-yeast breads with it. It does not have enough gluten to make dough rise well. If you see a bread that calls for almond flour or coconut flour (to a certain extent–coconut flour usually requires more eggs), you can often substitute this mix for a lower fat, lower calorie, more diverse-tasting flour. I’ve been doing keto on and off for a year. Before that, I explored eliminating “inflammatory” or “reactive” foods based on another eating program. I have Celiac and autoimmune issues and I think one of the reasons people stall with Keto is because they are eating too many typically “inflammatory” foods–foods that your body has a harder time digesting and as a result create systemic inflammation which, in turn, cause weight loss plateaus. For those trying to fight through a Keto Plateau, I would suggest eliminating ALL dairy (try subbing ghee for butter), artificial sweeteners (including stevia and erythritol) and all nuts for 5 days. I know it sounds close to impossible but all three of these Keto staples are some of the biggest culprits of inflammation in the body. I found this suggestion on another Keto website and tried it and dropped 6 lbs in 5 days. Another typically inflammatory food is Eggs. If you can’t eliminate all of these foods at once, try eliminating one at a time for a minimum of 5 days and see if there is any movement on the scale. For those who have stalled, chances are at least one of your Keto staples is holding you up. Good luck!

I love hearts of palm, I am steering away from pasta and other carbs. Hello? Made for me. Bought two cans. Made one two hours after delivery (with shrimp and a pesto-fredo sauce) and it was awesome. Delish. Fantabulous. I did not plop it into boiling water so I didn't get a chance to try it "softened" more like pasta and I don't really feel the need to. It was it's own experience and one I will keep buying into. Please buy this so they can keep making it, maybe they can try other pasta types as well. I'm partial to pappardelle
I was worried. I read my ingredients and follow the instructions to the letter. I made the little bow ties. I put them in the freezer for 15 minutes and I fried them in garlic and olive oil. They were so good. I think they would definitely stand up to any sauce that you added to them (after they were fried) I can’t wait to try them as fried ravioli. I’m also going to stuff a few with ricotta and sauerkraut, fry them, dress them with sour cream, and call them a pierogi.
At 60 minutes, the bread showed as done with a toothpick. Removed it from the oven and it sank down the center. I waited 15 minutes. Cut a piece off and it was wet, like not done in the center. I baked it 15 more min and it stayed the same. Is it supposed to be wet/moist like, maybe it’s oily from the coconut oil? If it’s supposed to be completely dry but moist, not wet, then something went wrong. 

Hi! I tried this the other day and it baked up strangely. I baked it for about 63 minutes and it was nice and crusty on top. It was still a bit gummy inside so I may need to bake it longer. However, when I flipped the loaf over it was extremely concave. The only thing I did differently is use canola oil instead of coconut oil. Any suggestions? Thanks much

Just wanted to post in case others share my initial trepidation about trying the recipe. I avoid anything super high maintenance, but was intrigued by the positive reviews, so I gave it a try. Success! I did everything the recipe said not to (used a silicone pan and cheap almond flour that was definitely not ultra fine, and I have no idea how old my baking powder is), and they still turned out great! I did liberally butter the silicone pan to make sure I could get the donuts out and also added a smidge of xanthan gum to help hold them together.
From pancakes to muffins, quick breads, cookies, cakes, pie crusts and sandwich bread, low-carb baked goods are all possible with a low-carb flour. You'll have to do some experimenting to see which flour is right for your specific baked products, and be prepared for both successes and failures. An all-purpose, low-carbohydrate blend takes much of the guess work out of the equation, but also removes the adventure from your quest. Be sure to follow all directions when replacing all or some regular flour with a low-carb variety.
I think I might have been in ketosis sooner but after 1 month I took my blood test at night and I was surely in and I had felt all the good effects of it too, like no hunger between meals etc. It wasn’t difficult to reduce the carbs to 20 net because you’re replacing it with good healthy fat which is so filling. I think my body likes to hold on to the fat as stubbornly as yours and I agree stress doesn’t help, but I have always been a slow loser. I’d suggest taking measurements and body fat and pictures so you can see the difference. If you really think you’re not progressing you may have to reduce calories too.
So today I was sitting here getting some work done and occasionally looking out the window. The roses on the trellis are pretty actively in bloom and the trees are loaded with bright green leaves. The colors are bright against a glowery gray sky, though and it looks chilly. It’s not in the least – I think the high today is going to be 81F – BUT it LOOKS that way.

I am your age and I understand the “food journey,” which leads to better health and overall well being. I have fibromyalgia and other immune disorders and have found that keto is best for me, as well in terms of energy, pain, and weight loss/management. I exercise daily and weight train in a fasted state with no problem. I fast regualarly, not eating for 14-19 hours, and I am not hangry nor hungry. I truly believe intermittent fasting, a keto diet, and exercise are the keys to true success for weight loss and maintance. Thank you for sharing your story, pictures, and delicious recipes. The ketogenic diet achieved national media exposure in the US in October 1994, when NBC's Dateline television programme reported the case of Charlie Abrahams, son of Hollywood producer Jim Abrahams. The two-year-old suffered from epilepsy that had remained uncontrolled by mainstream and alternative therapies. Abrahams discovered a reference to the ketogenic diet in an epilepsy guide for parents and brought Charlie to John M. Freeman at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which had continued to offer the therapy. Under the diet, Charlie's epilepsy was rapidly controlled and his developmental progress resumed. This inspired Abrahams to create the Charlie Foundation to promote the diet and fund research.[10] A multicentre prospective study began in 1994, the results were presented to the American Epilepsy Society in 1996 and were published[17] in 1998. There followed an explosion of scientific interest in the diet. In 1997, Abrahams produced a TV movie, ...First Do No Harm, starring Meryl Streep, in which a young boy's intractable epilepsy is successfully treated by the ketogenic diet.[1]


While body weight decreased significantly (-8.5 kg) in these 21 diabetic participants, the mean weight loss was less compared with what we observed in the LCKD participants of an earlier trial (-12.0 kg) [18]. Given that the diabetic participants had a higher baseline mean weight than the LCKD participants of our previous trial (131 kg vs. 97 kg), this translates into an even more dramatic disparity in percent change in body weight (-6.6% vs. -12.9%). This lesser weight loss might result from several factors. First, in the current study, most of the participants were taking insulin and/or oral hypoglycemic agents that are known to induce weight gain[20,21] Second, these same agents, particularly insulin, inhibit ketosis, which is strived for in the earliest phases of the LCKD; while it remains unclear whether ketones actually play a role in weight loss on the LCKD, previous research in non-diabetic patients has shown a positive correlation between level of ketonuria and weight loss success [22]. Lastly, compared with our previous study the participants in the current study had more comorbid illness, lower socioeconomic status, and a shorter duration of follow-up (16 weeks versus 24 weeks), all of which are associated with reduced success on any weight loss program [23].
Want perfectly uniform mini burger patties? Try using a lid from a small jar, or a cookie cutter, as a form for your ground beef. You’ll have to find one that is the right size (slightly larger than you want the burger to be once it is cooked) but once you have it you’re good to go. I liked this product a lot it fit in perfectly with my low carb diet. It is quite tasty and I enjoyed it with my morning coffee. My only camplaint is how Amazon packed it for shipping. They have become quite careless with their packing to protect items that can smash. The outer box of this product often will be damaged but the cereal in separate bags is usually fine.
The ketosis produced by fasting or limiting carbohydrate intake does not have negative effects for most people once the body has adapted to that state. The ketosis caused by diet has been referred to as dietary ketosis, physiological ketosis, benign dietary ketosis (Atkins), and, most recently, nutritional ketosis (Phinney and Volek), in an attempt to clear up possible confusion with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Hwu believes risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes — which are both associated with high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol — may be reduced by following the ketogenic diet, based on research. A recent study from Johns Hopkins found a ketogenic diet was not only safe, but effective for adults who had certain severe forms of epilepsy, supporting previous research.
A standby snack for everyone from toddlers to seniors, plain Cheerios are a moderately low-carb choice, with 20 grams per cup. Kay’s Naturals cereals in three flavors -- French vanilla, honey almond and apple cinnamon -- have 18 to 19 grams per 1.2-ounce serving. They get their sweet flavors from honey, sugar and stevia. Another low-carb choice is the soy-based cereal, Smaps, in cocoa or sweet maple flavors, which contain monk fruit or low-glycemic fruit concentrate and 8 grams of carbs per ½-cup serving.
I am trying to get back into keto. I did it before and I was so happy when I lost 10lbs (I did the keto for a month). I am ready to go back to this lifestyle. One of her faves: This grain-free granola from Thrive Market, which has a blissfully short ingredient list but tons of flavor.
Infants and patients fed via a gastrostomy tube can also be given a ketogenic diet. Parents make up a prescribed powdered formula, such as KetoCal, into a liquid feed.[19] Gastrostomy feeding avoids any issues with palatability, and bottle-fed infants readily accept the ketogenic formula.[31] Some studies have found this liquid feed to be more efficacious and associated with lower total cholesterol than a solid ketogenic diet.[18] KetoCal is a nutritionally complete food containing milk protein and is supplemented with amino acids, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is used to administer the 4:1 ratio classic ketogenic diet in children over one year. The formula is available in both 3:1 and 4:1 ratios, either unflavoured or in an artificially sweetened vanilla flavour and is suitable for tube or oral feeding.[51] Other formula products include KetoVolve[52] and Ketonia.[53] Alternatively, a liquid ketogenic diet may be produced by combining Ross Carbohydrate Free soy formula with Microlipid and Polycose.[53]

Hi Krystal, I haven’t tried a sweet version of this bread. Honey wouldn’t be low carb, so just keep that in mind. Adding a sweetener should work, but other ingredients would need to be adjusted. You may need a little more of the wet ingredients if using a granulated sweetener, or a little more almond flour if using a liquid sweetener. If you try adding something, let me know how it turned out for you!
Moreover, two recent meta-analyses sought to investigate the effect of LCD on weight loss and cardiovascular disease risk. Sackner-Bernstein et al. (19) compared LCD to LF, among overweight and obese men and women. The authors found a significantly greater effect of weight loss in the LCD vs. the LF diets (-8.2 kg vs. -5.9 kg). The impact of diet on cardiovascular risk factors was split, with LCD resulting in significantly greater improvements in HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while the LF resulted in significantly greater improvements in LDL and total cholesterol. From this the authors concluded that LCD were a viable alternative to LF diets and recommended “dietary recommendations for weight loss should be revisited to consider this additional evidence of the benefits of [low] CHO diets.” A significant limitation of this meta-analysis, however, was the authors’ definition of low-carbohydrate as a daily CHO consumption less than 120 grams. This value, while well below the standard recommendation of daily CHO consumption, still far exceeds the strict recommendation of KD (≤50 g/day), therefore the results of this meta-analysis must be approached with caution.
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders after stroke,[7] and affects around 50 million people worldwide.[8] It is diagnosed in a person having recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These occur when cortical neurons fire excessively, hypersynchronously, or both, leading to temporary disruption of normal brain function. This might affect, for example, the muscles, the senses, consciousness, or a combination. A seizure can be focal (confined to one part of the brain) or generalised (spread widely throughout the brain and leading to a loss of consciousness). Epilepsy can occur for a variety of reasons; some forms have been classified into epileptic syndromes, most of which begin in childhood. Epilepsy is considered refractory (not yielding to treatment) when two or three anticonvulsant drugs have failed to control it. About 60% of patients achieve control of their epilepsy with the first drug they use, whereas around 30% do not achieve control with drugs. When drugs fail, other options include epilepsy surgery, vagus nerve stimulation, and the ketogenic diet.[7]
I don’t know anyone doing keto with cardiac issues, but yes for diabetes. I’ve noticed though many doctors are not promoting keto at all and it’s disappointing to be honest. I hope you’ll find out what works for you or at least your doctor will research it before saying it isn’t a good idea. Anyway, sound advice can be found from Jimmy Moore who has been doing keto for years and years and his website and podcasts are full of interviews with doctors. Hi Louise, I haven’t tried that product so can’t say for sure if it’s a good choice, but it sounds like it is if the recipe worked for you – which is great! Feel free to add herbs, spices, or garlic powder if you want some flavor to the bread. I kept it plain to be used for many different applications. The number of slices will depend on how thick you cut them and the size of your pan.

Instead of adding sugar to your coffee, you can put a few drops of stevia in there to sweeten it up. Stevia is a great sweetener and won’t increase your blood sugar levels – so it’s a perfect way to sweeten your morning coffee. If you find stevia to have a bitter aftertaste, erythritol and monk fruit extract are two other keto-friendly sweeteners worth trying.
This granola is delicious, after making it several times I decided to add some shredded coconut, sesame and 100% maple syrup and it turned out a winner. Now I use different types of nuts depending what I have at home. Some times I slice it into bars and take with me to work and my daughter loves to take them to school. By the way, I made the granola with all raw nuts and it only took about 15 min baking time at 180•C.
If you're healthy and eating a balanced diet, your body controls how much fat it burns, and you don't normally make or use ketones. But when you cut way back on your calories or carbs, your body will switch to ketosis for energy. It can also happen after exercising for a long time and during pregnancy. For people with uncontrolled diabetes, ketosis is a sign of not using enough insulin.
Taken together, these results demonstrate a positive effect of LCD/KD on body composition. While KD may not be superior to other dietary strategies aimed at weight reduction, the evidence does suggest that it may be equally effective. Nevertheless, the International Society of Sports Nutritionists, in their Position Stand on the effects of diets on body composition, suggest the KD holds little benefit over higher CHO diets, with one notable exception; KD may enhance appetite control (1).

It was not hard as I thought but what helped with the lack of cravings is starting my day with the coffee, ghee and tablespoon of coconut/mct oil. I don’t do heavey cream . Once you begin youll see thats the least worry you will have. You can do it

Hi Jan, Sorry they didn’t work for you. It’s hard to say what happened without being in the kitchen with you. Did you use exactly the same ingredients and amounts? Also, if they were not cooked, then they probably needed to be in the oven for longer. If they were clumpy, it’s also possible that the almond flour wasn’t fine blanched (it needs to be) or the batter wasn’t mixed well enough. Hope this helps.

I began my low carb diet (around 50 net per day) almost 3 months ago. I have only lost 2 lbs. I need to lose at least 30. I am 62 years old and in good health. Everything I have read leads me to believe that I am doing everything correctly. I even make my own Keto bagels! What do you think could be the issue? I tried going down to less than 20 carbs but I just cannot do it. Thanks for any help you can provide.


Made them tonight. I thought I messed them up since they looked eggy but really they turned out great. I can’t do gluten so I tried the xanthum and I also added some garlic powder to the mix for taste.i think I cooked for 7 minutes total.we actually sliced them into little squares and threw them into homemade chicken noodle soup. It tasted close to dumpling style noodles. Not slick/chewy but very good. My 14 year old T1 loved them and wants me to make more. Overall it absolutely loved these. Will be making again in the very near future. Thanks for such a great and simple recipe!


I think these are unbelievable! This is actually the first time I've written a review on Amazon, but I feel like I have to with these. I am trying to do a low carb/low cal diet to lose about 30 pounds, and have a huge weakness for pasta. I have tried Shirataki noodles, spaghetti squash, skipping the pasta altogether and just making veggies with sauce, and this is BY FAR the best way to quench my craving for pasta.
Measuring blood ketones is the most reliable method. There is a home blood test you can use, but the strips can be very expensive. An alternative is to measure ketones in the urine with a dipstick test, which is much more accessible and inexpensive. However, this method is much less reliable and as time goes on and the body adapts to ketosis, it becomes even less reliable.

You deserve a medal for this recipe!!! I made it earlier today and it is absolutely AMAZING! It exceeded my expectations! It’s so delicious! It made enough to completely fill an extra large rectangle Tupperware. I was obsessed with natures valley granola before I went Keto and this is the same exact look and texture but this tastes even better! I’m so excited about this because I was getting sick of eggs for breakfast lol. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
