When you’re limiting carbs, cereals with dried fruit mixed in are best left on the shelf, because fruit increases the carb grams. Nuts are low in carbohydrates, so they add crunch and flavor without boosting the carb count. Three nutty cereals from Nutritious Living are lower-carb choices. Dr. Sears Zone Cereal in the honey almond flavor has 16 grams per ½-cup serving. It contains multiple grains and is sweetened with honey, molasses and evaporated cane juice crystals. Hi-Lo cereal comes in two nut-wielding flavors -- vanilla almond and maple pecan -- both with 13 grams of carbs per ½-cup serving. Like the regular flavor, these Hi-Lo cereals get their sweetness from an artificial sweetener, sucralose.
As with cold cereals, your best bet for a low-carb breakfast cereal comes in the form of whole grains. Oatmeal is an excellent choice because it is high in fiber and contains a substance called beta-glucan, which slows down the digestive process. That means you will stay full throughout the morning. Bran cereals can also be eaten hot, and whole grains such as quinoa or grits can be flavored to be either savory or sweet. Quinoa goes especially well with walnuts and raisins, dates or dried figs. It is is also scrumptious when flavored with a little bit of coriander and served with a poached egg on top. Grits are also a natural partner for eggs, but they are also delicious with pecans and fresh blueberries. Drizzle a bit of honey, agave or real maple syrup on top for sweetness. This will increase the carb count a bit, but the nutritional benefits of starting your day with a hearty, hot breakfast are more than worth the few extra carbs.
This is REALLY good. My OH also thought that this was ‘proper’ bread LOL! Why do people think that anything not made with wheat is not ‘proper’? I guess they don’t have a gluten intolerance. This really is the best low carb GF bread I’ve tasted in a LONG while. It will become a staple in this household that’s for sure. Will definitely still use the 90 second rolls as well for convenience!
I am saying sorry now. I just have to because I read all the commits. “Can I substitute the eggs with flax seed. LOL. I started keto and I am very excited to try these. I love pasta. Being of full of crazy thoughts and silicon candy molds, do you think it is possible to make ravioli? I realize I would have to do it in layers of sorts like baking the bottom of the mold and then filling it, cover and bake the top? And no I have not made it yet, but knowing it is a egg noodle I am excited and giving you 5 stars. will post again after I make a mess and enjoy dinner.
I had pasta last night, and I feel guilty that I cheated. This recipe is that good. I followed your directions exactly, including simmering the noodles in some sauce for a few minutes. What size pan did you use? It was hard for me to estimate and I ended up throwing away some egg mixture. Putting pan sizes in all your wonderful recipes would be helpful. Keep up the good work. You are my low-carb, go-to guru.
I love you guys! I never miss an email- something good in every one (usually recipes). I printed out the sweetener list and put it on the fridge. This is wonderful today, will print asap. We started low carb in April. In 2 months I lost 40 pda and my hub lost 28! When I went in for my 3 month A1C my count had dropped from 7.2 to 5.8!! My Dr was as thrilled as I was! I still have 160 pds to go but this is the easiest diet I have been on. Weekends are hardest though. We want to eat out the time- you have any suggestions??
Thank you for such a through list. I have been wondering how to count the spices used in cooking and now I know. I do have one question though that I can not find the answer to. When breaking down the macros for a recipe how do you count items that are listed as having fewer than 1 carb? Do you just count it as one? I am in a stall and wondering if I am not accounting for enough carbs.
I am a recent convert to using freeze-dried fruit and if you try this amazing crunchy granola you will see why. The fruit has a much more intense flavor than fresh berries and helps to add that fruity note to the nuts and coconut flakes. It also makes this cereal more child-friendly because the fruit turns the milk pink! This granola can also be formed into bars to give you a boost of energy through the day.
This is so incredibly helpful! My doctor told me I’m at high risk for Diabetes and that he would bring me back in 3 months for repeat labs. He told me to go on a low carb diet and without realizing it, I ended up doing the keto diet. I was determined to lower my carb intake even more and I haven’t had over 20g net carbs since I started. This is a lifesaver. Thank you!
Twenty-one of the 28 participants who were enrolled completed the study. Twenty participants were men; 13 were White, 8 were African-American. The mean [± SD] age was 56.0 ± 7.9 years and BMI was 42.2 ± 5.8 kg/m2. Hemoglobin A1c decreased by 16% from 7.5 ± 1.4% to 6.3 ± 1.0% (p < 0.001) from baseline to week 16. Diabetes medications were discontinued in 7 participants, reduced in 10 participants, and unchanged in 4 participants. The mean body weight decreased by 6.6% from 131.4 ± 18.3 kg to 122.7 ± 18.9 kg (p < 0.001). In linear regression analyses, weight change at 16 weeks did not predict change in hemoglobin A1c. Fasting serum triglyceride decreased 42% from 2.69 ± 2.87 mmol/L to 1.57 ± 1.38 mmol/L (p = 0.001) while other serum lipid measurements did not change significantly.
If there is a certain amount of glucose available in the blood, the body will choose to burn that as energy before it burns fats. This obviously prevents you from entering ketosis. While the general recommendation for most people is to shoot for 40 grams of carbs or below on a daily basis, this is actually somewhat relative to the individual. I will often go by percentages, saying that between carbs, proteins, and fats, carbs should make up between 5-10% of total calories.
My favorite sugar-free low carb BBQ sauce is a family recipe that I tweaked to make keto friendly. It is simple to prepare without a lot of added ingredients that aren’t necessary. You can find my recipe here. If you are looking for convenience, there are several brands that make a sugar-free variety that can be ordered from Amazon or you may find in your local stores. The only brand of store-bought sugar-free bbq sauce I have tried is by G. Hughes. They offer several different varieties, but I prefer hickory. I might be a little partial, but my homemade BBQ sauce makes this recipe taste much more authentic and flavorful.
If you are trying to get the kids to eat healthier and not rely on sugary cereals you might find this keto one will win them over. It has a great texture from the nuts and seeds and has a sweet warming flavor from the cinnamon and sweetener. This cereal is great with your choice of milk or can be made a bit more filling by adding in some fresh berries.
The main limitations of our study are its small sample size, short duration, and lack of control group. That the main outcome, hemoglobin A1c, improved significantly despite the small sample size and short duration of follow-up speaks to the dramatic and consistent effect of the LCKD on glycemia. For other effects, however, such as the rises in serum LDL and HDL cholesterol, the small sample size might be the reason statistical significance was not reached. Future studies of larger samples and containing a control group are needed to better address questions about the effect of the LCKD on serum lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Looking for that hearty crunch that’s packed full of flavor? Look no more. Instead of cracking open a box of Ritz or Cheez-Its, go ahead and make your own! You can make crackers from anything including flaxseed meal (featured in The RULED Book), chia seeds, or even almond flour to make your own homemade crunchy snacks with a delicious flavor of your own.
I just made this today. It was a bit runnier than in your video and I wondered what I did wrong. I think it had to do with the 1/4 cup melted coconut oil. I didn’t measure first and then melt so perhaps I ended up with more liquid? It’s not like the recipe wasn’t specific…. It was totally my error! I added a bit more flour to get the consistency right. I set timer for 50 min but it was done in 35 min! It is by far the best “keto bread” recipe I’ve made so far. But honestly I am a bread lover so no matter how good this is, in comparison, it will never be a replacement for the rye bread I love so much! Haha! But as far as a keto type bread, it was very good!!
There are several different types of flour made from seeds. Flaxseed meal is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and can be used in muffins, pancakes and other baked goods as an oil or butter substitute. A 1/4-cup serving has 8 grams of carbohydrates. Although more difficult to find, sunflower seed flour is very low in carbohydrates with less than 6 grams per 1/4 cup.
Thank you! I think though many doctors and nutritionists are not keto friendly at all. They still believe in moderation and that grains are important, my own hubby’s doctor, same thing. That way of eating has failed for so many of us, even my husband. I think the keto diet is especially helpful if you’re in pre-menopausal, but that’s just my 2 cents. I’d say do more research. I’v found Dr.Jockers on youtube and Dr.Eric berg to have sound advice.
While there are many almond-flour pastas advertised as low carb, be sure to triple-check the label. Many brands contain more carbohydrates than you’d believe. Al Dente Carba Nada contains over 24 grams of total carbohydrates, or 17 grams net carbs[*]. Fiber Gourmet, also advertised as low carb, contains over 40 grams of total carbohydrates per serving and 3 grams of sugar[*].
Yes you can lose fat on a low carb because it’s just another low calorie diet. How do I know this? I’ve done low carb, (Atkins, etc) high carb, (Slimming Word) moderate carb etc and log my food and was shocked each time to see they were all low calorie. After the initial week or so the rate of fat loss is same as any other diet. It’s calories in calories out. Simple. It’s what some call indirect deficit diet placing silly restriction, rules can eat must eat etc. and of course you lose weight but nothing to do with low carb. It works because it’s a low calorie diet.
Consequently, when you begin a ketogenic diet, it acts as a metabolic stressor on the body. In the process of relearning how to burn fat for energy, a mild metabolic stress is inflicted upon your mitochondria. This stress is just powerful enough to kill off old and dysfunctional mitochondria which stimulates the growth of new and more powerful mitochondria (5). The end result is more energy and a higher level of vitality.
1. These cookies are lightly sweetened. If you want them sweeter add more Sukrin Gold (2 tbsp) or add a little stevia glycerite (1/4 tsp) and taste. 2. All ovens are different and baking temps and/or times may need to be adjusted. If you have a wall oven, you might want to cook at 325 degrees F. The cookies might have to go a little longer if you do. 3. Be careful not to pack the almond flour and oat fiber. Packing ingredients leads to using more and can result in dry baked goods. 4. For a flatter, softer cookie use 4 oz of sliced almonds instead of 5 ounces and bake for slightly less time. Also use a room temperature egg instead of a cold egg. 5. Ingredient substitutions may affect texture, moisture content, and cooking time.
From the study itself: “Mortality increased when carbohydrates were exchanged for animal-derived fat or protein and mortality decreased when the substitutions were plant-based … Low carbohydrate dietary patterns favouring animal-derived protein and fat sources, from sources such as lamb, beef, pork, and chicken, were associated with higher mortality, whereas those that favoured plant-derived protein and fat intake, from sources such as vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads, were associated with lower mortality, suggesting that the source of food notably modifies the association between carbohydrate intake and mortality.”
While there are many different types of pasta today, the classic cooked, unenriched traditional pasta is about 30 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams. That’s your entire daily carbohydrate intake on the ketogenic diet, if you’re lucky. After that comes a minuscule 0.9 grams of fat, about 6 grams of protein and minimal micronutrients. Even whole wheat pasta, advertised as a health food, contains 37 grams of total carbohydrates[*].
