According to the Institute of Medicine, women should get 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day and men 30 to 38 grams a day, so it behooves you to know where the big numbers are. And, it turns out, lots of those big numbers are in foods that are naturals for the most important meal of the day—breakfast. Use the morning meal to jump-start your fiber intake and you'll find the recommended amount becoming a realistic goal.
Hi Beth, I do use the one that is linked from the recipe card and it doesn’t turn purple for me. But, I have heard some people say they did end up with purple bread – just not sure if they used the same brand or not. Either way it’s a visual thing and still totally fine to eat. Sorry to hear about the mix-up with the orange flavor, hope it was still edible for you and you’ll try again with the plain kind!

My question is about coffee…did you give it up? I was drinking way too much coffee with heavy cream so I finally gave that up for Califia almond/coconut creamer sugar free of course! Did you give up coffee during the keto trial?

In Asia, the normal diet includes rice and noodles as the main energy source, making their elimination difficult. Therefore, the MCT-oil form of the diet, which allows more carbohydrate, has proved useful. In India, religious beliefs commonly affect the diet: some patients are vegetarians, will not eat root vegetables or avoid beef. The Indian ketogenic diet is started without a fast due to cultural opposition towards fasting in children. The low-fat, high-carbohydrate nature of the normal Indian and Asian diet means that their ketogenic diets typically have a lower ketogenic ratio (1:1) than in America and Europe. However, they appear to be just as effective.[54] 

A standby snack for everyone from toddlers to seniors, plain Cheerios are a moderately low-carb choice, with 20 grams per cup. Kay’s Naturals cereals in three flavors -- French vanilla, honey almond and apple cinnamon -- have 18 to 19 grams per 1.2-ounce serving. They get their sweet flavors from honey, sugar and stevia. Another low-carb choice is the soy-based cereal, Smaps, in cocoa or sweet maple flavors, which contain monk fruit or low-glycemic fruit concentrate and 8 grams of carbs per ½-cup serving.
Of the 28 participants enrolled in the study, 21 completed the 16 weeks of follow-up. Reasons for discontinuing the study included unable to adhere to study meetings and unable to adhere to the diet; no participant reported discontinuing as a result of adverse effects associated with the intervention. All but one of the 21 participants were men; 62% (n = 13) were Caucasian, 38% (n = 8) were African-American (Table ​(Table1).1). The mean age was 56.0 ± 7.9 years.

There are theoretically no restrictions on where the ketogenic diet might be used, and it can cost less than modern anticonvulsants. However, fasting and dietary changes are affected by religious and cultural issues. A culture where food is often prepared by grandparents or hired help means more people must be educated about the diet. When families dine together, sharing the same meal, it can be difficult to separate the child's meal. In many countries, food labelling is not mandatory so calculating the proportions of fat, protein and carbohydrate is difficult. In some countries, it may be hard to find sugar-free forms of medicines and supplements, to purchase an accurate electronic scale, or to afford MCT oils.[54]


A systematic review in 2018 looked at 16 studies on the ketogenic diet in adults. It concluded that the treatment was becoming more popular for that group of patients, that the efficacy in adults was similar to children, the side effects relatively mild. However, many patients gave up with the diet, for various reasons, and the quality of evidence inferior to studies on children. Health issues include high levels of low-density lipoprotein, high total cholesterol, and weight loss.[24]
Made these donuts this morning, and they are delicious. The simplest and one of the best low carb donut recipes that I have tried. I did add a scoop of whey protein powder for structure, and that worked great. I used Swerve in the donuts and a small amount of Truvia (which contains a little sugar–but okay in this tiny amount per donut) for the topping. I got 8 donuts out of the recipe, but I think I actually could’ve gotten 10. I have two 6-cavity nonstick Wilton donut pans like the ones pictured in your link. Great recipe, Maya. Thanks!

Prior to the advent of exogenous insulin for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in the 1920's, the mainstay of therapy was dietary modification. Diet recommendations in that era were aimed at controlling glycemia (actually, glycosuria) and were dramatically different from current low-fat, high-carbohydrate dietary recommendations for patients with diabetes [1,2]. For example, the Dr. Elliot Joslin Diabetic Diet in 1923 consisted of "meats, poultry, game, fish, clear soups, gelatin, eggs, butter, olive oil, coffee, tea" and contained approximately 5% of energy from carbohydrates, 20% from protein, and 75% from fat [3]. A similar diet was advocated by Dr. Frederick Allen of the same era [4].


Unlike almond flour pasta, you might be better off ordering black bean pasta online. The Explore Asian brand is one you might consider, simply because of its low net carb content[*]. While enjoying dark, black noodles might take some getting used to, the taste is typically preferable to shirataki or other pasta alternatives. Pair with your low carb bread, preferably smothered in garlic and butter.

From pancakes to muffins, quick breads, cookies, cakes, pie crusts and sandwich bread, low-carb baked goods are all possible with a low-carb flour. You'll have to do some experimenting to see which flour is right for your specific baked products, and be prepared for both successes and failures. An all-purpose, low-carbohydrate blend takes much of the guess work out of the equation, but also removes the adventure from your quest. Be sure to follow all directions when replacing all or some regular flour with a low-carb variety.

AMAZING! I just made this bread and I can’t believe how perfect it is! My fiance and I are doing low carb. Not quite keto but trying to stay close to that range of carb intake! Honestly I’ve just been saying I’m avoiding bread, potatoes, and pasta. Either way this bread rocks. The only substitutions I made to the recipe was plain seltzer water in place of the still water. Wanted to give the dough some extra lift. I also put some pumpkin and sunflower seeds on top to increase the heartiness. This bread came out rocking our socks off. Can’t wait to make some grilled cheese Sammie’s with it!

Hi Louise, I haven’t tried that product so can’t say for sure if it’s a good choice, but it sounds like it is if the recipe worked for you – which is great! Feel free to add herbs, spices, or garlic powder if you want some flavor to the bread. I kept it plain to be used for many different applications. The number of slices will depend on how thick you cut them and the size of your pan.
I could not get chicken noodle soup off of my mind. I didn’t want zoodles. I didn’t want that weird textured low carb pasta. I wanted tender, slurpy egg noodles drifting in a rich broth surrounded by pieces of chicken. Hi Carl. I had never heard of it and upon research, it appears that Smucker’s (the parent company) does not make it available for sale in the States. I looked at the ingredients and it lists: cracked wheat, cracked rye, cracked and whole flax seeds and rice. At 27g carbs and 5g fiber, it would me my whole days worth of carbs. However, some people who do low carb diets can eat 100 carbs a day and still lose/maintain weight. If this is you, it might be something you can have. Most people on a ketogenic diet avoid grains as they tend towards inflammation. Other’s would not eat this product because it would cause too much of an insulin spike for them. If you’re new or just still learning the ropes for the keto diet food list, your biggest questions probably revolve around figuring out just what high-fat low-carb foods you can eat on such a low-carb, ketogenic diet. Overall, remember that the bulk of calories on the keto diet are from foods that are high in natural fats along with a moderate amount of foods with protein. Those that are severely restricted are all foods that provide lots of carbs, even kinds that are normally thought of as “healthy,” like whole grains, for example.
