This cereal, made by Nutritious Living, comes in four flavors – original, strawberry, vanilla-almond, and maple pecan – and has just six grams of net carbs per serving. These cereals also have 12 grams of protein and six grams of fiber to keep you feeling full until lunchtime. Despite the sweet-sounding flavors, Hi-Lo cereals have just one gram of sugar per serving. The cereal is made with soy grits, wheat gluten, soy protein, corn bran, rice flour, and corn meal.

Sunflower seed meal and pumpkin seed meal are ideal options for those who are allergic to any of the nut flours we mentioned above. These seed flours are high in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, copper, thiamine, selenium, and phosphorus, and relatively low in net carbs (less than five net carbs in every 1-ounce serving), making them a healthy keto-friendly option.

This may be a silly question, but what brand of Psyllium Husk Powder do you use? I’m looking for one that does not turn the bread purplish. When I clicked on the link next to Psylluim Husk in your recipe, it took me to Amazon. When I read the questions and answers about the product, some people said that it did turn their bread purplish. I have never purchased this product before and made the mistake of buying the orange flavor one. My bread smelled and tasted a bit on the citrus side! LOL

Dr. Campos, it is unfortunate that you retain the medical community’s negative stance on the ketogenic diet, probably picked up in medical school when you studied ketoacidosis, in the midst of an obesity and type II diabetes epidemic that is growing every year, especially among populations who will never see the Harvard Health Letter. The medical community has failed in reversing this trend, especially among children, and the public is picking up the tab, in the form of higher health insurance premiums to treat chronic metabolic diseases which doctors cannot cure. The ketogenic diet does not bid its adherents to eat unhealthy processed meats, and the green leafy vegetables that it emphasizes are important in a number of nutritional deficiencies. People lose weight on the ketogenic diet, they lose their craving for sugar, they feel more satiety, they may become less depressed, their insulin receptors sensitivity is improved, and these are all the good outcomes you fail to mention. There is a growing body of research which demonstrates the neuroprotective effects of the ketogenic diet to slow cancer progression, as well as diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, for which there are no effective medical treatments. Please respect your patients by providing them with evidence-based medical outcomes, not opinions.

Hi Patti, It’s up to you if you want to go by weight or by volume. I include both for convenience. Some people don’t want to weigh all their food, though weighing is definitely more accurate. The volumes listed are based on how a food is normally served, so for iceberg lettuce it would be chopped, not minced. It sounds like you’re weighing anyway, so in this case just use the weights instead (they are shown in grams in parentheses next to the volumes). Hope this helps!
Since your carbohydrate intake will be restricted, you'll have to rely more on healthy fats, like nuts, seeds, and avocados, for energy. You can also use oil, butter, and nut butters in your cooking to enhance the flavor and richness of dishes. In general, an appropriate serving of healthy fat is roughly the size of your thumb, though you can safely have a little bit more or less depending on your hunger and energy requirements.
Long-term compliance is low and can be a big issue with a ketogenic diet, but this is the case with any lifestyle change.  Even though the ketogenic diet is significantly superior in the induction of weight loss in otherwise healthy patients with obesity and the induced weight loss is rapid, intense, and sustained until at least 2 year, the understanding of the clinical impacts, safety, tolerability, efficacy, duration of treatment, and prognosis after discontinuation of the diet is challenging and requires further studies to understand the disease-specific mechanisms.

From an outpatient clinic, we recruited 28 overweight participants with type 2 diabetes for a 16-week single-arm pilot diet intervention trial. We provided LCKD counseling, with an initial goal of <20 g carbohydrate/day, while reducing diabetes medication dosages at diet initiation. Urine ketone data were missing in a median of 4 participants (range 0–8) at any given visit. Use this allowable low carb food list for Atkins Phase 1, (the Induction phase of Atkins) to help you start your low carb keto diet the right way. Included are fats, meats, eggs, dairy and the lowest low carb vegetables. As one loses weight, other higher carb foods are added such as nuts/seeds and lower carb fruits. These foods are systematically added back in Phase Two of Atkins. Over time, higher carb foods can be added back to the diet if eaten sparingly and if they fit within one’s daily carbohydrate intake. Hi Mona, While I can’t offer medical advice, I definitely think this bread is better for you than regular white or wheat bread. But, 5-6 pieces a day might be pretty high in calories and displace other nutrients as a result. I usually recommend focusing on a diet of whole foods, especially vegetables, eggs, meat, and healthy fats, with smaller amounts coming from nuts, nut flours, dairy and fruit. Of course each person’s needs are different and your doctor would know better than me what is best for you.
While these sources have lower carbs, they typically have higher fat contents. For example, most nuts are calorically dense with fat, though most of it is good fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated varieties. If someone is trying to reduce his fat intake as well as his carbohydrate intake, then it may be a good idea to look into low-carb flour varieties that also are low-fat, such as soy flour.
Psyllium husk powder is what you’ll need, and you can find it on Amazon. Flaxseed Meal is another ingredient you can use to provide a slightly chewy texture. Although I feel that it’s not as good as psyllium (as it gives a slightly gelled texture), many people have used it successfully in place of psyllium. Make sure you grab a pack or 3 from Amazon. It’s super cheap and lasts a long time!

Of course it does not match the price of mass produced cereals on the market, I’m not surprised. It’s about on par with other specialty Keto items in my opinion. It has 15 servings per bag and will last you two weeks if you eat one serving a day. To me it is well worth the price because if I were to have it as a snack every day that’s only $5 a week for something I enjoy eating!
There are many recipes here that use coconut flour OR almond flour. Some I even have instructions to use both (from the post above, you can see they are not easily interchangeable). Is he tolerant of almond flour? I have many recipes which use that. Some recipes that use a small quantity of almond flour/meal, you can actually use some seed flours such as sunflower or pumpkin. I managed to make Fat Head pizza once using ground sunflower seeds when I ran out of almond flour.

So today I was sitting here getting some work done and occasionally looking out the window. The roses on the trellis are pretty actively in bloom and the trees are loaded with bright green leaves. If you are like me you were brought up eating sugary cereals like frosted flakes and if the truth were told I do miss them! However now that we are eating keto they just don’t figure anymore, so this low carb recipe has been great to find. You are using coconut flakes and sweetening them, so you still have the sweet taste and crunchy texture that we all remember!
Once I tried it, though, it quickly became a favorite throughout my childhood. But instead of breakfast, one of my favorite parts of the day was sitting down with a bowl of cereal in the afternoon – be it with my latest art project, in front of the TV, or even a homework assignment. The only other thing it could have been is that I live at 5100′ elevation and it was cold and snowing the day I made them. I am going to make them again and see what happens. I am not giving up! 🙂

Hi Tanisha, Sunflower seed flour should work in the same quantity (you can buy it here). I haven’t tried it for this recipe, but it does often work as a good almond flour replacement. The only thing to keep in mind is that the bread may come out green in color – sunflower seed flour tends to do this when baked – but it doesn’t affect the taste. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
First time we were able to have ‘bread’, on Passover, as I was able to find the kosher for Passover version of all the ingredients. Costco had Kosher for Passover (KFP) Almond flour & Himalayan sea salt. Original Metamucil (KFP all year) for the phylum husks (although I could have gotten the husks on line). Passover Gefen baking powder was in my local kosher food store, La Bonne coconut oil is KFP, though other brands may be as well. This was such a hit recipe!!

Risks were also increased for individual causes of death including coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer. These diets should be avoided.”

The ketogenic diet was developed in the early 1900’s to help control pediatric seizure cases who were not responding to medical treatment. Low-carb diets gained a lot of attention due to the Atkins nutrition plan which emerged in the 1970’s and remains a fairly popular program today.
