If you’re new or just still learning the ropes for the keto diet food list, your biggest questions probably revolve around figuring out just what high-fat low-carb foods you can eat on such a low-carb, ketogenic diet. Overall, remember that the bulk of calories on the keto diet are from foods that are high in natural fats along with a moderate amount of foods with protein. Those that are severely restricted are all foods that provide lots of carbs, even kinds that are normally thought of as “healthy,” like whole grains, for example.
Made in mini muffin pans, will have to oil them better next time so they come out easier. Taste great, although sadly more like a muffin than donut (the shape doesn’t help, lol). I may try to thicken it up to deep fry next time. Was out of cinnamon so I used pumpkin spice. Not so strict on low-carb and wanted the kiddos to like them, so offered cinnamon/sugar, powdered sugar, and toasted coconut for coating. I recommend the coconut! Browned in a dry skillet makes it nice and crunchy… just how to make it stick was the only drawback.

One of the most powerful tools available to individuals on the ketogenic diet is fasting. Caloric restriction forces the body to burn through all of its available carbohydrates. Therefore fasting serves as an excellent kick start for getting the body into ketosis. Furthermore, periodic fasting while the body is in ketosis helps maintain that state because it keeps carbohydrate levels in the body negligible. Not to mention, fasting has been practiced by many cultures for thousands of years, and has numerous health benefits, generally, and is an incredibly powerful tool for improving brain health, specifically.

There are many recipes here that use coconut flour OR almond flour. Some I even have instructions to use both (from the post above, you can see they are not easily interchangeable). Is he tolerant of almond flour? I have many recipes which use that. Some recipes that use a small quantity of almond flour/meal, you can actually use some seed flours such as sunflower or pumpkin. I managed to make Fat Head pizza once using ground sunflower seeds when I ran out of almond flour.
As with cold cereals, your best bet for a low-carb breakfast cereal comes in the form of whole grains. Oatmeal is an excellent choice because it is high in fiber and contains a substance called beta-glucan, which slows down the digestive process. That means you will stay full throughout the morning. Bran cereals can also be eaten hot, and whole grains such as quinoa or grits can be flavored to be either savory or sweet. Quinoa goes especially well with walnuts and raisins, dates or dried figs. It is is also scrumptious when flavored with a little bit of coriander and served with a poached egg on top. Grits are also a natural partner for eggs, but they are also delicious with pecans and fresh blueberries. Drizzle a bit of honey, agave or real maple syrup on top for sweetness. This will increase the carb count a bit, but the nutritional benefits of starting your day with a hearty, hot breakfast are more than worth the few extra carbs.

The ingredients above are usually quite expensive and might take some experimenting to get the hang of using. The low-carb or keto way of eating by no means require baking. If you don’t miss bread you certainly don’t need to replace it with a low-carb version but if you do miss bread or maybe just miss the baking itself the recipes below might be of interest to you.

Hi Vivian – I am 60 yo and researching Keto and would love more information from you since we are same age. What is TDEE? What fat sources do you use and how much daily? What are some meals you make regularly and what does a day of food look like? What is the easiest/best way to count carbs getting started? If you and Brenda are ok with you giving me your email I would love to learn more from you! I just need some help getting started. Brenda – thank you for all your information and recipes!

Sometimes a hot cereal hits the spot, but with around 28 grams per serving, regular oatmeal may overshoot your carb goals. However, sugar-free instant oatmeal has around 19 grams per packet, if you don’t mind the artificial sweeteners, and instant Cream of Wheat has 20 grams per packet, which is about ¾ cup prepared. Two other brands, Sensato and ProtiDIET, are sucralose-sweetened hot cereals. Sensato hot cereal comes in apple cinnamon, strawberrilicious and vanilla almond, with 12, 11 and 10 grams of carbs per ½ cup, respectively. ProtiDIET oatmeals have 6 carb grams per packet and come in cinnamon spice, apple cinnamon and maple brown sugar flavors.

I’m almost positive that you are being trolled at this point… I’m so sorry Marye. You really must absolutely dread sharing your strokes of brilliance with the no-carb/low carb/keto community as I’ve noticed almost all of them expect GF to apply and when it doesn’t they go ape-crap insane about it then you end up with this comment section which is America at its finest. Thank you for the awesome recipe!
Switching to a low-carbohydrate diet doesn't necessarily require sacrificing flavorful Italian meals for bland alternatives. We already know that there are a ton of mouthwatering recipes that use zucchini, squash, and other delicious veggies in place of the traditional flour-made staple. If, however, you don't have the time to chop and spiralize your main ingredients, fear not: There's a low-carb pasta substitute for every type of dish.
Also, I wanted to let you know what a fabulous addition your recipes were to our Christmas. I made the orange spritz cookies which were well received by those with diabetes, my gluten free friends, and everyone! I made them Christmas Eve. Christmas morning, I made your apple coffee cake and it was fab along with eggs, sausage and fruit. Thank you so much!
Just made these, without a silpat (I used parchment) and with a wonky cookie sheet (I desperately need a new one, and will have one before I make these again) but they were great! I really wanted chicken noodle soup, as I woke up this morning with a sore throat.. These are awesome!! Very little taste, not eggy at all, and my chicken soup really hit the spot! Thanks!
